30% food crops produced annually lost due to poor post-harvest management- Minister

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto has stated that food security and food safety are priority areas for the Akufo-Addo government. According to reports, about 1.2 million people, representing 5 percent of Ghana’s population are food insecure whiles 2 million are vulnerable to become food insecure. The key causes of food insecurity in Ghana are generally linked to post-harvest losses.

It is estimated that 30% of food crops produced annually are lost due to poor post-harvest management, poor farm to market roads, insufficient and inappropriate storage facilities and lack of processing facilities to convert the perishable produce to long shelf-life.

This was disclosed by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Mr. George Oduro in a speech read on behalf of the Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, at the ECOWAS joint workshop in Accra.

The objective of the seminar is to develop a West Africa (ECOWAS) comprehensive plant pest and disease prevention, surveillance and mitigation framework that will contribute to the realization of food and nutrition objectives of ECOWAS Agriculture Policy.
