ECOWAS : CDP regional document validated by the ministers

The 15 Members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) validated on Monday in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, the Regional Document of the Community Development Programme of ECOWAS (CDP- ECOWAS).

Indeed, the Ministers responsible for the CDP from the 15 ECOWAS Countries met on Monday February 24th, 2014, reviewed, analyzed and approved the Regional Document (ECOWAS-RD) for West Africa region.

Speaking on behalf of the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Désiré Kadré OUEDRAGO, the Commissioner in charge of macroeconomic policies, Dr Ibrahim Bocar BA, recalled the various stages and challenges of the formulation process of the CDP-RD by major development Actors of West Africa.

In closing the Ministers meeting, Mrs. KABA Niale, Minister to the Prime Minister in charge of Economy and Finance of Côte d’Ivoire said that "the validation of the CDP Regional Document is an essential and crucial step towards the realization of vision 2020 (of ECOWAS )."

She insisted on the innovative and inclusive approach of the formulation process the CDP-ECOWAS went through and recalled that "the CDP was consensual because it contains the development ambitions of all the stakeholders (Member States, Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs) of ECOWAS space, civil society, the private sector and the research sector).

This development programme is thus an appropriate response of ECOWAS to the economic, political and social challenges in West Africa. The compact contains a total of 242 projects and programs, including 72 promoted by Member States, 161 at the initiative of IGOs 161 and 9 carried by Non State Actors. The document contains three (3) volumes and an appendix detailing the 242 projects and programs selected. The cost of the CDP compact priority projects is estimated at $ 28.4 billion of which $ 7 billion was mobilized, meaning an amount of $ 21.4 billion funding to be raised.

The CDP-RD will be submitted for adoption to the ECOWAS decision making bodies: Council of Ministers and the Conference of Heads of State and Government.
