ECOWAS outstrips EU in Non-traditional exports for 2013

For the first time, last year the ECOWAS region outstripped the EU in terms of receiving non-traditional exports (NTE).

Traditionally, the European Union (EU) has been the country’s principal destination for NTE exports from Ghana with the ECOWAS sub-region being second but data from the Ghana Exports Promotion Authority shows that the EU received 31.55 percent of total exports in the year under review while the West African region received 34.83 percent.

This interesting revelation was disclosed by the chief executive officer of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Mr. Gideon Kwame Boye Quarcoo, at a press briefing for the upcoming 24th National Awards for Export Achievement in the year 2013.

This feat, according to Mr. Quarcoo, means that Ghanaian exports are beginning to make significant in-roads into the West African markets — in spite of the dismal 11% of global trade that occurs within the region.

“This is where we need to put our focus in terms of export values. These countries are just at our borders and charity begins at home,” he stressed.
